Augusta RiverHawks News Release
The Augusta RiverHawks spoiled the party in Pensacola Saturday night as they defeated the Ice Flyers 3-2 during the Ice Flyers' home opening game of the 2011-12 season. The win gives the RiverHawks a perfect 3-0 record this week, propelling them into a share of the top spot in the SPHL standings with eight points.
Offensive depth continued to be a strong-suit for the RiverHawks as they yet another offensive leader step up. Forward Lucas Labelle scored the RiverHawks' first two goals in the game, his first two of the season.
RiverHawks' goaltender David Wilson made his second start of the season and picked up his first win in an impressive performance in Augusta's crease. The former University of Maine product made 36 saves including several big stops late in the third period to preserve his team's one-goal lead and the victory.
Forward Jim Gehring, who had four points in Friday night's win over the Louisiana Ice Gators including a hat trick, picked up the game winning goal for the RiverHawks. The goal gives him a share of the lead in goal scoring amongst all SPHL players. Defenseman Sean Stagles tallied the assist, his first point as a professional.
RiverHawks' forward Aaron McGill picked up an assist on one of Labelle's goals and was named the game's third star despite missing nearly half of it. Late in the second period McGill was assigned a five-minute major elbowing penalty and was given a game misconduct, ejecting him from the remainder of the match.
The next game for the RiverHawks will be on the road in Huntsville, AL as they face off against the Havoc Thursday night. It is the first game of back-to-back games against the Havoc. The two teams face off again Friday, November 4th on Phoenix Refrigeration Ice at the James Brown Arena.
