Augusta RiverHawks News Release

The Augusta RiverHawks put their first ever playoff victory in the books Friday night at the James Brown Arena defeating the Pensacola Ice Flyers 5-2. The win gives the RiverHawks a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series that now heads to Pensacola for game two.

The star for the RiverHawks was goaltender Jon Olthuis. The All-SPHL Second Team member was stellar making 38 saves including 15 in the third period as the Ice Flyers attempted to storm back.

The RiverHawks got on the board first while short-handed when Branden Kosolofsky blocked a shot in his own zone, broke into the Ice Flyers end and slid a pass across to Drew Baker who fired it in.

Defenseman Keith Wynn would make it a two-goal game when he took a shot from the point that somehow found its way through Ice Flyers' goaltender Ryan Scott. However, just eight seconds later Ice Flyers' star Chris Wilson cut into the RiverHawks' slot and wired a shot past RiverHawks' goaltender Jon Olthuis.

Lucas Labelle would regain the two-goal lead for the RiverHawks later in the period, and Egor Mironov would extend the lead to three early in the second frame. It would not stay that way long as once again the Ice Flyers struck back quickly, as Kevin Kozlowski shot the puck through Olthuis' legs.

The Ice Flyers were buzzing in the third period, mounting an intense attack to try to score two and even the game. However, it would be the RiverHawks' Captain and newly anointed SPHL Most Valuable Player Matt Auffrey who would score into the empty net to ice the game.

The two teams play game two of the series Saturday night in Pensacola. Game three, if necessary, will be played Sunday night at the James Brown Arena. Tickets will be on sale at the James Brown Arena box office Sunday morning.
