RiverHawks Win Big in Return to James Brown Arena

Augusta RiverHawks News Release

The Augusta RiverHawks returned home Friday night to the James Brown Arena after three weeks of road games and gave the home town crowd quite a show defeating the Columbus Cottonmouths 5-1. It was a consistent 60-minute effort combined with a strong goaltending performance from Jon Olthuis in his first game back with the RiverHawks that led the team to victory.

The win is the RiverHawks' fifth in a row and moves them to within two points of third place in the Southern Professional Hockey League standings.

The RiverHawks opened the scoring early and escaped the first period with a one-goal lead. Jason Price had the first goal for the RiverHawks, and defenseman Luke Lucyk regained the lead for his club after the Cottonmouths managed to even the game.

Lucyk's goal would turn out to be the game winning goal, as the RiverHawks exploded in the second period to take a commanding 4-1 lead. Egor Mironov scored a beautiful breakaway goal, firing the puck through the "five-hole" on Cottonmouths' goaltender Ian Vigier. That was followed shortly by Travis Dunstall continuing his torrid offensive pace since joining the RiverHawks, as he followed up on a Matt Auffrey rebound and slid it in.

The RiverHawks wasted no time in the third period ending any comeback attempt by the Cottonmouths, as Jim Gehring scored just 42 seconds in. The RiverHawks played conservative, shut-down hockey the rest of the way and limited the Cottonmouths to just five shots the remainder of the game.
