Cincinnati Riverhawks News Release
(Cincinnati, OH) â The Cincinnati Riverhawks recorded their first preseason win last night with a 1-0 win over Ohio Cup champion Flyers of the University of Dayton. Almost 200 people braved the near freezing cold to watch the Flyers and the Riverhawks at Piqua's Wertz Stadium. The Riverhawks would like thank the University of Dayton, the city of Piqua, and the Northern Eclipse Soccer Association for hosting the match.
Coach Nick Ranieri commented that the team played well and had numerous opportunities to score. "Eric played beautifully in goal the first half stopping all of Dayton's chances which came mostly from counterattacks."
F Juan Sastoque scored the lone goal in the 24', his third of the preseason. Juan received the ball from F Salvatore Piriane, turned and took the ball up the middle. He was then able to split a couple of defenders and put the ball in the top right corner of the net, out of the reach of the Dayton keeper.
The Hawks had 4 or 5 more excellent chances to score in the 2nd half, but were just not able to put the ball in the net.
"The team is looking better and better," said coach Ranieri. "We will only get better as time goes on and when Philippe [Godoy] and Allen [Eller] re-join the team, we can only improve."
