RiverHawks Snap Losing Streak With Shootout Victory
January 22, 2011 - SPHL (SPHL)
Augusta RiverHawks News Release
Augusta RiverHawks goaltender Adam Avramenko shut down his former team in the shootout, turning away all five shooters to preserve a 4-3 victory against the Fayetteville FireAntz Saturday night in North Carolina. Aaron McGill scored the game winning goal in the shootout for the RiverHawks who snapped a four-game losing streak with the win.
It was an important victory for the RiverHawks who had lost some ground in the Southern Professional Hockey League standings the past two weeks. The win over Fayetteville combined with a Knoxville Ice Bears loss keeps the RiverHawks in a tie for fourth place, two points up on the Ice Bears and four up on the FireAntz.
The two teams swapped goals in the first period, as Rob Sich opened the scoring for the FireAntz with a power play goal, quickly followed by a tying marker from RiverHawks' forward Lucas Labelle.
The RiverHawks exploded out of the gates in the second period with a pair of goals less than two minutes apart. First it was McGill with his first of the game, set up by defenseman Drew Baker. That was quickly followed by Travis Dunstall's first professional goal assisted by captain Matt Auffrey.
The FireAntz would narrow the lead back down to one goal before the end of the second period on the strength of a goal from Mark Versteeg-Lytwyn. They would wait until mid-way through the third period to tie the game, as SPHL scoring leader Chris Leveille would tally the goal that would send the game to overtime. The RiverHawks would push hard for the winning goal, firing 13 shots at FireAntz' goaltender Travis Yonkman, to no avail
Neither team scored in overtime despite each team enjoying a 4-on-3 power play during the extra period.
The RiverHawks are back in action at the James Brown Arena Friday, February 4th as they face the Columbus Cottonmouths. The puck drops at 7:30pm.
