Riverhawks Ready for Home Opener

April 29, 2003 - A-League (A-League)
Cincinnati Riverhawks News Release

The Cincinnati Riverhawks are preparing for their home opener this Friday, May 2 against their Central Division rival, the Indiana Blast. The game, which begins at 8:00 pm, will be played at the Town & Country Sports Complex. This game will also begin the competition for the Border Battle Cup.

Since 1999, the Riverhawks and the Blast have played each other at least four times each season. Indiana leads the series, 11-6-2. This game will mark the first of six matches between the two teams over the course of the season. The series ends July 2 with a game at Indiana. The Riverhawks hope to bring home the first Border Battle Cup to Cincinnati and its fans.

The Riverhawks have been preparing for their home opener for quite a while. This included playing an eight game exhibition schedule which overlapped the beginning of the regular season. With one exhibition game remaining against Xavier University, the Riverhawks have gone 3-4. With the regular season already underway, Cincinnati is currently 1-1 and is tied with the Minnesota Thunder and the El Paso Patriots atop the Central Division standings.

With only a few days remaining before the game with the Blast, Riverhawks head coach Nick Ranieri is optimistic about how things will turn out.

"This will be one of our toughest games this season," said Ranieri. "Our matches with Indiana are always tough because of the rivalry. It's a derby. They are coming off two losses and will be very aggressive. One advantage we have is that most of their players are unfamiliar with our home field. We also should have a full roster available to us. If everyone is healthy then we should have no worries about scoring."

The game is this Friday, May 2 at 8:05 PM (ET). The gates open at 7:00 PM.

As an A-League premier team and part of the United Soccer Leagues, the Cincinnati Riverhawks enter its sixth season in 2003. For tickets and general team information call (513) 326-GOAL or visit www.riverhawks.com.
