August 16, 2011 - SPHL (SPHL)
Augusta RiverHawks News Release
The Augusta RiverHawks Hockey Club has announced that they have re-signed forward Jim Gehring for the 2011-12 season. Additionally, the Team has signed forward Jesse Eckternach to their 2011 training camp roster.
Gehring, 27, played his second professional season last year and split time between the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) and the Federal Hockey League (FHL). During his time with the RiverHawks, he played in 31 games scoring nine goals and adding eight assists for 17 points. While in the FHL, the speedy winger scored 13 goals in 17 games with the Cape Code Bluefins.
During the 2009-10 season, Gehring played in 13 games with the Reading Royals of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL). Prior to turning pro, the 5-foot-11, 190-pound Gehring enjoyed three prolific seasons at West Chester University. During his tenure there Gehring scored 155 goals and added 122 assists for 277 points in just 103 games.
"Jim came to us mid-way through the season and slowly progressed into a core member of the team," said RiverHawks' Head Coach Brad Ralph. "Jim is an explosive skater and has one of the league's best shots. He is a quality person and will be a leader on our team this year."
Eckternach, 25, played four years at Mercyhurst College, an NCAA Division I school that produced RiverHawks' 2010-11 star forward Neil Graham. Prior to attending Mercyhurst, the 5-foot-11, 210-pound winger's scoring potential was on display in junior hockey, scoring 45 goals and adding 51 assists for 96 points in just 102 games with the Fargo-Moorhead Jets of the North American Hockey League.
"Jesse is looking for a chance to prove himself," said Ralph. "He had minimal playing time at Mercyhurst but is a strong skater, has a great shot and has all the tools necessary to produce a lot of points at this level. He comes highly recommended and will be a force to be reckoned with."
The RiverHawks open the Southern Professional Hockey League's season with a home game against the Mississippi Surge in a rematch of the 2010-11 President's Cup Final. The game will be played at the James Brown Arena on Thursday, October 20th at 7:35pm.
Season tickets are on sale for the 2011-12 season and are available through the RiverHawks' front office at 706-993-2645. Information on the team and tickets is available at www.augustariverhawks.com.
