Cincinnati Riverhawks News Release
(Cincinnati, OH) â The Cincinnati Riverhawks lost last night to the Richmond Kickers 4-1. This loss, coupled with Minnesota's drops Cincinnati into second place in the Central Division.
"I think the 12 days off hurt us more than helped," commented Coach Nick Ranieri. "The score could have been much closer. We out shot Richmond in the first half and missed five good opportunities. Two missed an open net and one was stopped by their keeper."
Richmond was able to score twice in the first 20 minutes of the game with goals by Greg Simmonds (15') and Mike Burke (20'). Cincinnati's defense kept the Kickers from scoring again in the relatively clean played first half.
The Kickers scored again in the 60th minute on a shot from David Testo.
Cincinnati prevented a clean sheet with a goal by midfielder Chris Doré, his first of the season. Doré wove is way through a couple of defenders in the penalty box and ripped a shot into the left side of the net from 15 yards out.
Testo scored Richmond's final goal, his second of the night, in the 74th minute of play.
The second half was not as clean as the first, with the officials handing out 6 yellow cards and 1 red card. The red card was issued to Cincinnati's Bobby Meyer after receiving 2 yellows. Meyer received his second yellow when Testo kicked the ball into Meyer's head after Richmond was called offsides. Meyer turned and pushed Testo and received his second yellow of the night. Testo was also booked after the official spoke to the linesman closest to the incident.
"Testo should have received a red card for such an intentional act," said Ranieri when asked about the incident.
Further commenting on the game, Ranieri said, "Unfortunately our defense under performed. Their goals came on loose balls from our defense and counterattacks. We hope to do better against El Paso on Sunday."
The Riverhawks next game is Sunday, June 1 against the El Paso Patriots at the Town & Country Sports Complex. The Riverhawks previously beat the Patriots on May 10 3-0. Game time this Sunday is at 5:05 pm.
