Cincinnati Riverhawks News Release

(Cincinnati, OH) – The Cincinnati Riverhawks lost today to the Minnesota Thunder 2-1 in double overtime.

On a humid day in Cincinnati, the Riverhawks and the Thunder played a long game with Minnesota edging out Cincinnati. This loss places Cincinnati and Minnesota in a tie for first place in the Central Division with 12 points each.

The Riverhawks scored first with a goal by forward Marcel Matis in the 14th minute. Matis received a pass from forward Byron Carmichael and was able to beat a defender who was all over him. When Minnesota keeper Joe Warren came out to challenge him, Matis put the ball past him into the lower right corner of the net.

Minnesota forward Johnny Torres tied the game in the 61st minute of the second half.

Despite many chances, neither Cincinnati nor Minnesota was able to score again in regulation, so the game went into overtime.

The first 10 minute overtime period saw no goals scored. The second 10 minute period looked to end the same way when in the 9th minute of the period, Johnny Menyongar scored off a cross from Torres.

While losing sole possession of first place is rough, even harder is being knocked out of the U.S. Open Cup. This game doubled as the second leg of the U.S. Open Cup qualifying. Minnesota won the first leg 1-0 and their win today allows them to advance to next round.

The Riverhawks have a well deserved rest until their next game. Cincinnati travels to Richmond May 30 to face the Kickers. Their next home game is June 1 when they host the El Paso Patriots again.

As an A-League premier team and part of the United Soccer Leagues, the Cincinnati Riverhawks enter its sixth season in 2003. For tickets and general team information call (513) 326-GOAL or visit www.riverhawks.com.
