RiverHawks Edge Cottonmouths in Overtime

Augusta RiverHawks News Release
The Southern Professional Hockey League's leading goal scorer missed uncharacteristically on his first chance to score the game winning goal in overtime Wednesday night, but he made sure to convert his second chance. Augusta RiverHawks' forward Jim Gehring hammered in a one-timer, just moments after he missed a wide open net to gain redemption along with two points in for his team, as the RiverHawks edged the Columbus Cottonmouths 4-3 at the James Brown Arena.
The win avenges an overtime loss against the Cottonmouths a couple of weeks ago in Augusta. More importantly it gives the RiverHawks a three-point lead on the second-place Knoxville Ice Bears, and a nine point advantage on the Cottonmouths who sit in third.
It was a big game for the RiverHawks coming off of a poor performance on Sunday night in Fayetteville, so they were looking for their leaders to step up and take control. Each of the RiverHawks Captains led the way, as Captain Matt Auffrey had a goal and an assist, and both Alternate Captains, defensemen Ed Snetsinger and Jason Price, also had a goal and an assist each.
Both teams enjoyed strong goaltending performances on the night, but it was Peter Skoggard who made 27 saves to pick up his second straight victory at the James Brown Arena.
In spite of adding an Overtime Loss to his record, Cottonmouths' goaltender Ian Vigier played extremely well, making 36 saves including six in the extra frame before Gehring finally scored the game winner.
The RiverHawks are back in action on Phoenix Refrigeration Ice at the James Brown Arena Saturday, January 14th as they play the red hot Pensacola Ice Flyers. It is "Pink the Rink Night", as the RiverHawks will be wearing special pink jerseys that will be auctioned off at the end of the game. Proceeds from the auction will be going to the Lydia Project.
The puck drops at 7:35pm. Tickets for the game are available through the RiverHawks' office and the James Brown Arena box office. Additional information on the Team, tickets, and schedule are available on the RiverHawks' home on the web, www.augustariverhawks.com or by calling 706-993-2645.
