March 18, 2012 - SPHL (SPHL)
Augusta RiverHawks News Release

The Augusta RiverHawks clinched their first-ever Southern Professional Hockey League regular season championship in just their second season with a dominant 6-2 victory over their in-state rival Columbus Cottonmouths.

For the second night in a row forward Branden Kosolofsky was again the man of the hour, exchanging last-night's late game heroics for tonight's exhilarating hat-trick, scoring three goals to lead his team to the historic victory.

The winner of the regular season championship is awarded the William B. Coffey Trophy, and is anther feather in the cap of the young franchise which was a runner up for the trophy last season before making it all the way the SPHL Finals.

The game was played in three very distinct parts, as the RiverHawks dominated both the first and third periods. Kosolofsky got the scoring started mid-way through the first period, followed up by goals from linemate Kyle Watson and Egor Mironov in less than five minutes, racking up a seemingly commanding 3-0 lead early.

The second period was an entirely different period, as the RiverHawks struggled to stay out of the penalty box, and the Cottonmouths pounced with two power play goals just 21 serconds apart. The goals were scored by Sam Bowles and Jordan Braid.

If the crowd at the James Brown Arena entered the third period nervous their team may succumb to the comeback attempt by the Cottonmouths, they quickly learned otherwise as Jim Gehring scored a short-handed goal just 24 seconds into the frame. That goal was quickly followed up by Kosolofsky's final two of the night in just over four minutes, giving the RiverHawks the final choke-hold on the game.

In addition to clinching the Coffey Trophy, the RiverHawks also ensured that they will break the SPHL all-time record for winning percentage in a season and tied the record for the most points ever recorded by an SPHL during a regular season.

The RiverHawks are back in action on Phoenix Refrigeration Ice at the James Brown Arena Sfriday, March 23rd as they play the Knoxville Ice Bears in Fan Appreciation Night, the last home game of the season. The puck drops at 7:35pm .Tickets for the game are available through the RiverHawks' office and the James Brown Arena box office.
