Augusta RiverHawks News Release

The Augusta RiverHawks announced Tuesday that they acquired the rights to defenseman Ricky Helmbrecht from the Knoxville Ice Bears. Going the other way is the rights to forward Chad Ziegler, currently with the Greenville Road Warriors of the East Coast Hockey League.

In 23 games this season, Helmbrecht has two goals and six assists for eight points. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound 27-year-old also added 56 penalty minutes. Last season he ranked among the SPHL leaders in goals and points amongst defensemen scoring 14 goals and adding 19 assists for 33 points in 53 games.

Prior to beginning his SPHL career, Helmbrecht played three seasons in Europe, spending time in Germany and France. He also played a season in Australia. During his season in France he led the league in goals by a defenseman with 10 in just 11 games.

In 30 games of his rookie campaign with the RiverHawks, Ziegler had eight goals and ten assists for 18 points. The 6-foot-2, 195-pound forward steered clear of the penalty box for the most part, picking up just 13 penalty minutes. Before turning professional Ziegler spent four years at Yale University, and prior to that spent time in the Alberta and British Columbia Junior leagues.

The RiverHawks will return to home ice on February 16th and 17th. Tickets can be purchased in advance by calling the RiverHawks at 706 993 2645 or in-person at the James Brown Arena box office.
