Riverdragons To Participate in Back-to-School Events At Local Elementary Schools
August 5, 2004 - NBA G League (G League)
Columbus Riverdragons News Release
COLUMBUS, GA.âThe Columbus Riverdragons will continue to show their support for education in the Chattahoochee Valley by welcoming students back for the new school year at Midland Academy and River Road Elementary from 8:00 to 8:45 A.M. on Monday, August 9th. Riverdragons mascot Rivvy D, team president J. Barry McMullin, members of the River Rage Dance Team, and the Riverdragons front office staff will meet and greet students as they return to the classroom.
"This is only the beginning of the Columbus Riverdragons' community initiative and appearances for the upcoming season," said Riverdragons team president J. Barry McMullin. "We will be making many more visits to schools and other community organizations throughout the season. We truly value education and continue to promote the NBA's Read to Achieve program as part of our goal of instilling the value of education in students at an early age."
The centerpiece of the NBDL educational and community relations effort is the Read to Achieve program, which works to instill a life-long love of reading and encourages families and adults to read regularly with young children. Throughout the year, the Riverdragons execute a number of reading-related programs and activities such as the Welcome Back to School events, Read to Achieve Day, and monthly Reading Timeouts. These programs take place at schools, libraries, and community organizations as well as at the Columbus Civic Center. Over the course of our first two seasons, Riverdragons coaches, players, dancers, and staff have made over 450 public appearances and distributed over 4,000 books.
The NBDL, the NBA's minor league, includes the Fayetteville Patriots (N.C.), NBDL Florida, Huntsville Flight (Ala.), Roanoke Dazzle (Va.), Columbus Riverdragons (Ga.), and Asheville Altitude (N.C.).
Designed to help grow the sport of basketball both domestically and internationally, the NBDL serves as a source of on-court talent for the NBA's 30 teams and as a diverse human resources pool for the NBA and its teams by training employees in management, operations, public relations, sales and marketing positions.
The Riverdragons will open their 2004-05 NBDL season on Saturday, November 20th at the Columbus Civic Center against the Huntsville Flight.
