Columbus Riverdragons News Release
COLUMBUS, Ga., October 28, 2002 - The Columbus Riverdragons will open training camp Sunday, November 3 at Psalmond Road Recreation Center in Columbus, Ga. to begin preparation for the 2002-03 NBDL season. The Riverdragons training camp will run from Sunday, November 3 â Thursday, November 14, leading up to the team's season opener against the defending NBDL champion Greenville Groove on Friday, November 15 at the BI-LO Center in Greenville, South Carolina.
Following Sunday's opening workout, the Riverdragons will practice twice a day from Monday, November 4 â Friday, November 8 at Psalmond Road Recreation Center, North Side Recreation Center and Comer Gymnasium.
The Riverdragons will move to Comer Gym, the team's regular season practice facility, on Friday, November 8 and spend the rest of training camp there. A complete 2002 Riverdragons Training Camp schedule with times for media availability is attached below.
The Riverdragons will hold the team's annual Media Day on Wednesday, November 13 at Comer Gym from 11 a.m. â Noon.
The Riverdragons will play two preseason games, opening at home against the Groove on Saturday, November 9 at the Columbus Civic Center at 7 p.m. The Riverdragons final preseason game is Monday, November 11 against the Asheville Altitude in Asheville at 7:15 p.m.
"We couldn't be more excited to get going," said Riverdragons head coach Jeff Malone. "We have a solid core of veterans returning to build off of the success we achieved last season. Tremaine Fowlkes was our first NBA call-up in team history. I can't wait to begin the business of seeing who will be next. We also have some unfinished business considering we finished just two points shy of the NBDL Finals last year.."
The Riverdragons will bring 25 players to camp to compete for 10 roster spots. Returning players from the Riverdragons inaugural season expected to attend camp include forwards Nate Johnson, Tang Hamilton and Sean Daugherty; guards Saul Smith and Jeremy Veal; and center Kareem Poole.
Hamilton (Memphis) and Daugherty (Sacramento) were both in NBA training camps this October. Johnson participated in the 76ers free agent camp this summer.
The Riverdragons allocated players - forward Carl Mitchell (Northern Kentucky University) and guard Sean Peterson (Georgia Southern University) - will also vie for roster spots. The Riverdragons will be allocated two more players prior to Thursday's player draft. In accordance with league rules, the Riverdragons must keep one of their four allocated players on the team's 2002-03 roster. Last season, returning guard Saul Smith was the first allocated player in Riverdragons history to make the team's opening day roster.
The Riverdragons have also invited guard Kevin Morris to attend camp. The former Georgia State University point guard beat out 90 players in the Riverdragons open tryouts in mid-October for a special invitation to attend the Riverdragons training camp and potentially make the team.
The balance of the Riverdragons training camp invitees will come from the 2002 NBDL Player Draft, which will take place over 14 rounds and be conducted via conference call from locations in each of the eight NBDL markets beginning at 5 p.m. on Halloween. The Riverdragons will make their selections in front of fans at Milan's Italian Eatery at the Riverdragons 2002 NBDL Draft Party.
