Columbus Riverdragons News Release
COLUMBUS, GAâThe Columbus Riverdragons will continue to show their support for education in the Chattahoochee Valley by welcoming students back for the new school year at Midland Academy from 7:30 to 8:30 A.M. on Monday, August 11th. Riverdragons mascot Rivvy D, team president Barry McMullin, members of the River Rage Dance Team, and the Riverdragons front office staff will meet and greet students as they return to the classroom.
"As a father with two boys in grade school I understand the value of supporting young students within our community," said Riverdragons team president Barry McMullin. "Being a local professional sports team, one of our goals in the community is to instill the value of education in students at an early age. We plan to visit a number of schools throughout the Chattahoochee Valley during the upcoming school year in order to further our efforts in promoting the NBDL's predominant educational program, Read To Achieve."
The centerpiece of the NBDL educational and community relation effort is the Read to Achieve program, which works to instill a life long love of reading and encourages families and adults to read regularly with young children. Throughout the year, the Riverdragons execute a number of reading related programs and activities such as the Welcome Back to School events, Read to Achieve Day, and monthly Reading Timeouts. These programs take place at schools, libraries, and community organizations as well as at the Columbus Civic Center. Over the course of our first two seasons, Riverdragons coaches, players, dancers, and staff have made over 400 public appearances and distributed over 3,500 books.
The NBDL, the NBA's minor league, includes the Fayetteville Patriots (N.C.), North Charleston Lowgators (S.C.), Huntsville Flight (Ala.), Roanoke Dazzle (Va.), Columbus Riverdragons (Ga.), and Asheville Altitude (N.C.).
Designed to help grow the sport of basketball both domestically and internationally, the NBDL serves as a source of on-court talent for the NBA's 29 teams and as a diverse human resources pool for the NBA and its teams by training employees in management, operations, public relations, sales and marketing positions.
The Riverdragons will open their 2003-04 NBDL season on Friday, November 28th at the Columbus Civic Center against the Asheville Altitude. For more information about the Riverdragons and the NBDL's Read To Achieve Program, log on to www.columbusriverdragons.com or call Tim Becwar at 706-225-1104.
