Saginaw Sting News Release
(April 23, 2011 Highland Heights, KY) - Saginaw brought a four game winning streak into the Bank of Kentucky Center Saturday night, unfortunately it came to an end in the most exciting UIFL game of the season. With the River Monsters up 57-50 with 51.8 seconds to go, Saginaw's John Jacobs returned a fumble 47 yards to pull the Sting to within one point 57-56, but the Sting kicker Chris Kollias missed the extra point to send the game into a possible overtime.
Ricardo Lenhart caught a UIFL-record six touchdowns with five coming in the first half alone. Lenhart stated "their secondary was giving us a nice cushion all game so we just took advantage of their positioning". Three Northern Kentucky receivers finished the game with at least 100 yards of receptions. Jarod Lorenzen finished the game 30-for-40 for 327 yards and seven touchdowns. He distributed the yards pretty evenly as all three receivers recorded at least 100 yards on the game. Willie Idlette led the way with 123 yards on 11 catches, while Lenhart added 105 yards with 12 catches. The third member of the receiving corps, Butch Abshire, had seven catches for 100 yards.
Sting quarterback Tommy Jones also had a record breaking evening as he set a new UIFL record in passing yards with 332 yards. Zac Nichols also hauled in and league tops 181 yards in receptions. The Sting had a few scoring chances early on in the game but came up short only scoring one point in the first quarter. The first two Sting drives of the game resulted in a missed field goal and an interception, so Saginaw played catch up for the entire game. "We just need to tie four quarters together and keep improving every week, we have gotten off to some slow starts the last few weeks and we have to get better coming out of the blocks", stated Tommy Jones, Jones added, "this was a solid team we played and we cannot make mistakes and get off to bad starts against a team of this caliber".Northern Kentucky improves to 8-1 on the season and the Sting drop to 6-3, a full two games behind the River Monsters. Saginaw will be home this Friday at the Dow Event Center in a key matchup against Johnstown, before getting another chance to face the River Monsters in two weeks.
