River City Rascals News Release
O'Fallon, MO - Two more contracts came in to the River City Rascals on Tuesday, one familiar face accompanied one new face, which has General Manager Steve Malliet buzzing.
Ryan Czyz and Josh Regits signed deals on Tuesday to wear the Rascal red, white and black in 2008.
The Czyz signing will add depth to the River City outfield. The Ottawa, Illinois native joins Luke Barganier, Jeff Miller and Phil Laurent as outfield candidates. Czyz played in 71 games for the Rascals in 2007, batting .231 and stealing 11 bases.
"Ryan ads sheer speed to our line-up," Malliet said. "If he gets on base he's going to score. He puts a lot of pressure on the defense. I know Ryan has been working hard in the off season to improve his on-base percentage and if he does that, he could be an all-star caliber player in our league."
Rigits will be thrown right into the fire as the Rascals depend on him holding down one of the spots in the starting rotation.
"We believe Josh can be a top quality starter in this league," Malliet said. "Greg Taggert from the Gary Southshore Railcats called me after we made the trade and stated that we got a real good young pitcher that will perform at a high level in this league. We are excited to add Josh to our new and improved pitching staff this year."
Regits became the Rascals property to sign after being traded to River City this fall. The deal completed a trade during the 2007 season when the Rascals sent Bobby Mosby to the Joliet JackHammers of the Northern League.
In seven starts with the JackHammers last year, Regits lasted into the sixth inning in all of them. He went 2-4 with a 6.10 earned run average.
"Last season was Josh's first in professional baseball," Rumfield said. "This year he knows what to expect and from all indications from others around the Northern League, he has the stuff to be a front of the line pitcher in the Frontier League this season."
These two signings are just part of the effort by Rumfield and Player Procurement Director Jeff Bittiger to help bring a championship to River City in the tenth anniversary season of baseball in O'Fallon.
"Toby and Jeff continue to do a great job of re-shaping this team," Malliet said. "It should be a very exciting season for our fans."
The Rascals 2008 campaign kicks off on May 21 at Rockford and open the home schedule against the cross-town rival Gateway Grizzlies on May 24. Season tickets, mini-plans and group outings can be purchased by calling 636-240-BATS.
