(ST. CLOUD, MN) - The St. Cloud River Bats Baseball Club announced Monday the addition of Jon Hansen (Fort Scott Community College) as the team's pitching coach for the 2011 season. Hansen makes his coaching debut in the Northwoods League, but does have playing experience as a relief pitcher with the Brainerd Blue Thunder back in 2005.

"This is a great opportunity to come up here and coach," Hansen said via telephone. "It's what a lot of coaches around the country want to do."

Hansen is in his first season as pitching coach at Fort Scott (Kan.) C.C. The last two seasons Hansen assisted at Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College, where he worked with pitchers, and coordinated the strength and conditioning program. Hutchinson C.C. participated in the NJCAA World Series last spring.

"He's a hungry, young coach," Field Manager Ben Quinto said. "He's very determined to push the guys. Jon is going to be a very good guy to have."

Prior to coaching, Hansen spent two years as a player at Hutchinson C.C. Upon graduation, he played his final two seasons at Augusta (Ga.) State University. He graduated from Augusta State with a Bachelor's Degree in Exercise Science and Kinesiology with an emphasis in pre-physical therapy.

During the 2005 season with the Blue Thunder, Hansen made nine appearances, two of which were starts.

"Jon is a good find because he's spent significant time in various summer leagues around the country, including as a player in the Northwoods League," River Bats Managing Partner Joel Sutherland said. "Because of that, I think he'll help our pitchers immensely.

Hansen also has experience coaching summer ball. Last summer he served as pitching coach for the Nevada Griffons of the MINK (Missouri-Iowa-Nebraska-Kansas). Before that, he skippered the Augusta Nationals of the Great South Summer Collegiate League.
