Risher Adds Two for Final Push

July 11, 2002 - arenafootball2 (af2)
Mobile Wizards News Release

Mobile WizardsÂ’ head coach Alan Risher today announced the addition of 6 players to the arenafootball2 teamÂ’s roster, hopefully completing player changes for the 3 games remaining in the 2002 inaugural season.

Risher hopes his squad, eliminated from playoff contention, can still have a hand in deciding the outcome of the divisional playoffs of the American ConferenceÂ’s South Divison.

The WizardsÂ’ next opponent, Jacksonville (FL) Tomcats are at the bottom of the division standings with a 5-8 record, but only two games out of the playoff picture, behind the Florida Firecats and Charleston (SC) Swampfoxes. Mobile travels to Jacksonville for a Saturday night contest against the Tomcats then complete the series July 19th in the WizardsÂ’ season home finale at the Mobile Civic Center.

MobileÂ’s 4th kicker of the year is 5-8, 200-pound Derek Mintzer from the University of South Florida. Risher has been most displeased with the kicking efforts of Michael Vaughn, Tommy Robinson and Rhaoul Guillaume and hopes Mintzer will fill a gaping hole in the WizardsÂ’ offense.

Also new to the roster are two fullback/linebackers, 6-0, 230-pound Rufus Williams of Mississippi Valley State and Charles Pool, a 6-0, 245-pounder from Louisiana-Lafayette.

Risher hopes three new linemen will afford more protection for Mobile quarterbacks Melvin Hill and Kelvin Robinson, plus put defensive pressure on the opponents QBÂ’s. Newly assigned are 6-3, 280-pound Roger Green from Southern University, 6-3, 300-pound Troy Davis from Grambling and 6-5, 280-pound Franklin Thomas, also of Grambling.

The home finale against Jacksonville on July 19th will be Fan Appreciation Night, with ticket prices of $5 and $8. Further information can be obtained by calling the WizardsÂ’ office at (251) 694-0200.
