af2 Changes Playoff Schedule
July 11, 2002 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release
CHICAGO â The ArenaCup 2002 playoffs and championship game dates have been changed, the arenafootball2 league office announced today. First-round games will be played on August 1-4, conference semifinals August 8-11, and conference championship games the weekend of August 15-17. ArenaCup 2002 is now scheduled for Friday, August 23, with a possible shift to August 22, depending on the site of the game.
"We took a look at the situation and decided it would be in the best interest of our teams and fans to make these changes," af2 Executive Director JAY MARCUS said. "We feel our team staffs, coaches and players will benefit by having more time to prepare and rest between rounds, and it will be easier for our fans to attend games later in the week."
The playoff format remains unchanged, as the two top teams from each division (by overall record) will meet in the first round, with the first-round winners meeting in predetermined interdivision brackets in the conference semifinals. Those winners will meet in the conference championship games to decide the participants in ArenaCup 2002, which, for the first time in af2 history, will pit the champions of the American Conference and National Conference.
With three weeks left in the regular season, 12 teams have already clinched playoff berths, with four spots remaining.
