After spotting the Machine two early goals, the Riptide closed the first quarter with eight straight goals of their own to take a lead of 8-2 after 15 minutes of play. Graham Gill (Navy '05) and Combs each recorded two goals for the Riptide in the opening quarter.
"Chicago came out hard, but we regrouped and responded well to their early pressure," said Riptide head coach John Tucker. "We shot the ball extremely well, played great defense and transitioned well. It was a tremendous night for the Riptide."
Combs, described by Tucker as a natural scorer who needs only a little bit of time and space to be effective, credited his teammates' for putting him in a position to have a big game.
"I think that was the key for us," said Combs. "We really played unselfishly. All five of my goals were scored with assists."
Combs collected two more goals in the second period - including one on the power play - and the Riptide went to the locker room with a halftime lead of 13-6. Meanwhile, Jarboe recorded 15 saves through 30 minutes of action.
The Riptide closed the third quarter with two straight goals to take a lead of 16-9 through 45 minutes of play. Lindsay was credited with two of the Riptide's three goals in the quarter, and he led the Riptide with five points (3 goals, 1 two-point goal, 1 assist) through three quarters.
The Riptide added four more goals in the final quarter, including a shorthanded tally from Lindsay.
For the game, Los Angeles out-shot Chicago 48-41, went 1-for-1 on the power play and 2-for-4 on the penalty kill.
