Riptide Lose to Rock 16-10

The New York Riptide and Toronto Rock played at the Place Bell arena on Friday night in front of a packed crowd. The Rock brushed off a slow start to win their second game of the season against the Riptide 16-10. Nick Rose continued his strong season, shutting the Riptide out in the third quarter, allowing the Rock to build their lead. Jeff Teat was sensational for the Riptide once again, with three goals and five assists to lead the Riptide. This win moves Toronto into sole possession of first place at 7-2, while the Riptide do not move down the standings with the loss as they now sit at 5-5.
The New York Riptide began their first trip to Montreal on fire, scoring the game's first three goals. Connor Kearnan got the crowd on their feet one minute into the game with a behind-the-back goal to kick off the game. Jeff Teat followed with two goals of his own, while potential Rookie of the Year Callum Jones scored his first goal in his NLL career to give the Riptide a commanding 5-2 lead after one-quarter of play.
The Rock answered back in the second quarter behind three goals from Mark Matthews, who was incredible in this game with a game-high 11 points. The game was tied heading into halftime at 7-7 after a high-paced first half that ended with a Brad Kri and John LaFontaine fight to get the crowd on their feet.
The third quarter became the Nick Rose show as the Rock goaltender was unbeatable in the third quarter. Nick Rose shut out the Riptide in the third quarter, as the Rock offense was able to score three goals and stretch out their lead. The Rock powerplay was clicking on all cylinders in this matchup, going 6/7 and making the Riptide pay for spending 20 minutes in the penalty box. Of those six goals, the Rock scored four on the powerplay in the fourth quarter after Brent Noseworthy had to go to the box for 5-minutes for a high Cross Check.
Stephen Keogh scored twice in the fourth quarter to stop a five-goal run for the Rock, but Mark Matthews was just too dominant in this matchup to come back from. Dan Ladouceur felt the Riptide's energy was off the entire game despite the strong start. " It didn't feel like we were playing Riptide lacrosse. You have to go back, have a hard look in the mirror, hard look at the tape, and come out with improvements the next week."
The Riptide will return to action next Friday, February 23rd, on the road against the Colorado Mammoth who are 3-6 and having a tough year after making the finals last year. The Rock will return home to Toronto next Saturday to play the Vancouver Warriors.
