Riptide Lead Start to Finish in Dominant Win over Storm
SAINT JOHN - After winning one home game in 10 tries, the Saint John Riptide have fashioned a two-game winning streak at Harbour Station.
Saint John played what coach Nelson Terroba called their best four quarters of basketball Friday night, downing the Island Storm 90-69 in National Basketball League of Canada action.
"Defensively, it starts there for us always, but we didn't have any lapses tonight," Terroba said after the game. "The team was connected all night defensively and we never allowed for a run from the Storm.
"Offensively, the guys are starting to play around each other and off each other. T.J. (Maston) is a threat inside and we're starting to play inside-out off him. Brent Arrington is great in transition, so we're attacking with him, Frank (Bartley) can stretch out the floor and Jerry (Jeremiah Mordi) had a nice night for us stretching out the floor as well."
Bartley topped Saint John with 23 points. Mordi scored 20 and Maston added 19 points, 13 rebounds and three blocked shots. Arrington recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds for Saint John, which improved to 9-16 and moved three games ahead of the Storm in the Atlantic Division standings.
Bryce Washington had another big night on the glass for the 'Tide, ripping down 16 rebounds, including six at the offensive end, to go along with eight points.
"I just try to play to my strengths. I'm a rebounding machine, that's one thing I do very well and I've got to keep it going," said Washington, who had 18 rebounds in a win over the Moncton Magic Wednesday night. "We've got plenty of players on this team who can score 20 points so it's my job to get us extra possessions."
Sampson Carter scored 23 points for the Storm, who fell to 5-17. Robbie Robinson added 15.
Saint John went into the final 12 minutes with a 69-54 advantage after a solid third quarter.
The Tide were ahead 44-35 at the half after leading by as many as 18 midway through the second quarter before the Storm closed the gap late.
Saint John opened the game on a 10-0 run before closing the first quarter with a 26-17 advantage.
The 'Tide are back in action on Sunday when they travel to Moncton to take on the Magic.
Then they are home for two games, Wednesday against the St. John's Edge and Thursday versus the Storm. Both games are 7 p.m. tip offs.
