February 18, 2004 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Lewiston MAINEiacs News Release

This afternoon, the Rimouski Oceanic organization confirmed to the Lewiston MAINEiacs that Sidney Crosby will be in the lineup for tomorrow night's game at the Central Maine Civic Center.

The Rimouski Oceanic released a statement the media on Friday that were planning on making Sidney Crosby a healthy scratch for 2 games in protest of the QMJHL officiating as it relates to the lack of penalties called on players against Sidney Crosby.

Crosby is a 16-year rookie phenom in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and currently leads all scorers with a total of 112 points in 50 games played (48 goals, 64 assists). Crosby has already been projected as the first overall draft pick in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft and has been compared with some of the greatest NHL superstars of all time.

With or without Crosby in the lineup - the Lewiston MAINEiacs have a perfect record against the Oceanic thus far in the 2003-2004 season winning all 6 games. The two teams face-off on two more occasions, with tomorrow night's game at the Central Maine Civic Center and the final encounter in Rimouski on March 9th.

Tomorrow night's game is a very important possible 2 points for the MAINEiacs as teams jockey for playoff positioning. The MAINEiacs are currently 3rd in the Eastern Division and trail 2nd place Rimouski by 5 points and are only 6 points behind the division leading Chicoutimi Sagueneens. Lewiston has also played 3 less games than the Oceanic and 2 less than the Sagueneens.

The first place team in each of the QMJHL's 3 division receive a first round bye in the playoffs. The bottom 3 teams overall in the league are eliminated from the post season. The first round would see the 4th place team face-off against the 13th place team overall. The 5th place takes on the 12th overall and so on. All series are best 4 out of 7. If the playoffs were to commence today, the MAINEiacs, currently 9th overall in the league would face off against the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies who are 8th. Rouyn-Noranda would hold home ice advantage. The difference between the 8th and 9th spot in the league is 5 points so the MAINEiacs are pressing for a strong stretch the the final 12 games of the regular season to move up and guarantee itself home-ice advantage.
