Charlotte Eagles News Release
The Charlotte Eagles have advanced to the USL-2 National Championship match for the third consecutive year. This time they will face the 2005 USL-1 National Finalists, the Richmond Kickers in Richmond on Saturday, August 26th. Kickoff is slated for 7:00pm and the match will be broadcast live on Fox Soccer Channel.
The 2005 National Champion Charlotte Eagles finished off the regular season with an 8-4-8 record for 32 points, good enough for a second place finish in regular season league play. Charlotte faced Pittsburgh in the two-game semi-final series and advanced to Saturday's Championship match on a 6-1 aggregate goal advantage after defeating Pittsburgh 4-0 and 2-1. This will mark the third consecutive season that Charlotte has been in the USL-2 Championship Final. Charlotte won the title in 2000 and 2005. This will be the fifth time in the teams 13 year history to advance to the Championship match.
The 2005 USL-1 National Finalists, the Richmond Kickers will host the USL-2 Championship versus Charlotte. Richmond played in the USL First Division from 1997 - 2005. They are sure to be tough competition for Charlotte. Richmond's team hasn't changed much since last season when they advanced to the USL-1 final only to lose on penalty kicks. Richmond won their only Championship title in 1995 at the PDL level. In 1996 they lost in the USL-2 final, and they lost in the USL-1 final in 2002 and 2005. Richmond was the top team in the USL-2 regular season this year, finishing with a 13-3-4 record for 43 points. Richmond beat Charlotte three out of the four times that the two teams matched up this season. Charlotte held on for a tie at home in the third match up, which was played in Charlotte. The Kickers faced Cincinnati in the semi finals, advancing with a 2-1 aggregate win over the Kings.
The USL-2 Championship match will be played at Richmond's home field, the University of Richmond Stadium on August 26th at 7:00 pm. Fox Soccer Channel will televise the match live at 7:00 pm eastern standard time. Check local listings or visit http://foxsoccer.viewerlink.tv to see how you can get Fox Soccer Channel.
