Richmond Hockey Fights Cancer is a grassroots charity that was formed in 2003 within the local hockey community of Richmond, Virginia. The goals of the group are to raise funds and awareness for cancer causes by public service, sponsored events and other charitable efforts. Members of the organization have all had their lives touched by cancer and the team counts several cancer survivors amongst their ranks.
The charity has partnered with The National Hockey League's Hockey Fights Cancer Program which works directly with the United States and Canadian Cancer societies.
Proceeds from this event will be allocated to benefit The NHL Hockey Fights Cancer Program as well as other Local and National Cancer Organizations. The Signature event of the charity, the Annual Hockey for Hope Benefit Game, which for past two years has been held the at the Richmond Coliseum, raised over $50,000 since its inception.
In addition to the annual charity game, local fundraising efforts have also involved auctions, blood and platelet drives. In November, 2007, the team traveled to Charlottesville to play a charity game sponsored by the Sperry Marine Hockey Club to benefit the UVA Health System Cancer Center.
Locally, members of the organization also donate their time volunteering for cancer organizations and community outreach programs for cancer patients such as the VCU Health System Massey Cancer Center, the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life and ASK Oncology.
