WAPPINGERS FALLS, N.Y. - Grant Richardson demolished two home runs in the Hudson Valley Renegades 6-5 loss to the Aberdeen IronBirds on Sunday afternoon at Dutchess Stadium. Richardson tallied three total hits in the six-game series, and each hit left the ballpark.
Hudson Valley jumped ahead in the bottom of the second against Aberdeen starter Daniel Federman. Richardson launched a solo homer to give the Renegades a 1-0 lead.
The IronBirds tied the game in the top of the third against Renegades starter Blane Abeyta. Connor Pavolony drilled an RBI double to left to level the score at one.
Hudson Valley took the lead back in the bottom of the third. Tyler Hardman powered a two-run homer off Jake Lyons to make it 3-1 Renegades. The home run was Hardman's team-leading 16th of the season.
With the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the fourth against Lyons, T.J. Rumfield walked to stretch the lead to 4-1.
In the top of the fifth, Darell Hernaiz singled, advanced to second on a Davis Tavarez walk, and scored from second on a throwing errors to cut the deficit to 4-2.
Blane Abeyta was excellent again for Hudson Valley, firing six innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits, walking one and striking out five.
In the bottom of the seventh, Richardson blasted his second homer of the afternoon, a solo shot to left-center off Daniel Lloyd (1-3) to extend the edge to 5-2.
The IronBirds rallied for four in the top of the eighth to take the lead against Ryan Miller and Carlos Gomez (1-3). Billy Cook skied a two-run homer and Pavolony smoked a two-run triple to put Aberdeen on top 6-5. Three of the four runs were charged to Miller.
In the bottom of the ninth, Hardman picked up the first triple of his professional career, but Rickey Ramirez stranded him at third and earned his second save of the season to slam the door.
Hudson Valley will enjoy an off day tomorrow before traveling to begin a pivotal six-game series with the Brooklyn Cyclones at Maimonides Park. First pitch on Tuesday night is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Coverage begins on the Renegades Baseball Network at 6:45.
