Richard Named Sher-Wood Player Of The Week
January 5, 2010 - SPHL (SPHL) News Release
CHARLOTTE, NC (January 5, 2010) -- The Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) today announced Michael Richard of the Mississippi Surge is the Sher-Wood SPHL Player of the Week for December 28-January 3.
Richard, who captured SPHL Rookie of the Year honors with Twin City last season, scored three goals and dished out five assists as Mississippi continued their surge toward the top of the standings.
On Tuesday, the St. Constant, Quebec native scored his 11th goal of the season as the Surge picked up a point in a 4-3 overtime loss at Knoxville. After recording an assist in Mississippi's 3-2 win over the Ice Bears on Friday, Richard erupted for a goal and three assists in a 5-4 win over Huntsville on Saturday. Richard was particularly key on the Mississippi power play as he scored once and set up two other man-advantage goals in the win. The Elmira College product then helped the Surge extend their regulation unbeaten streak to 10 games as he scored the overtime game-winner and added an assist in a 2-1 win over Pensacola on Sunday.
Richard, who finished second in scoring for Twin City during his Rookie of the Year campaign last year, was selected by Mississippi in the expansion draft this past summer. Currently, he is second in the SPHL both in scoring with 41 points and in assists with 28.
