
Rhinos To Open Postseason At Home Aganst Charleston

(Rochester, NY)... The Rochester Rhinos will begin the 2008 USL First Division playoffs next weekend against the Charleston Battery in a two-legged, aggregate goals series. The Rhinos learned of their playoff opponent when the Seattle Sounders fell to the Vancouver Whitecaps, 3-2, on Saturday night, leaving Rochester as the fourth seed in the First Division table. The Seattle loss meanwhile, secured a fifth place finish for Charleston after they fell to the Carolina RailHawks, 2-1, on Saturday night.Â
The two-game series will begin on Friday, September 26 at PAETEC Park with kickoff slated for 7:35 p.m. Game Two will take place from Blackbaud Stadium in Charleston, South Carolina on Sunday, September 28. Kickoff time for Game Two is still to be determined. Tickets for the Rhinos first round playoff match at PAETEC Park are on sale at the PAETEC Park Box Office with all available seats on sale for $5.00.
Rochester and the Charleston met three times during the regular season with the Battery winning all three matches by scores of 2-0, 1-0 and 3-1. The Battery however, finished the season with a 3-8-4 record during the second half of the regular season.
The matchup will mark the fifth time that Rochester and Charleston have clashed during postseason action. The Rhinos hold a 3-1 all-time series record, advancing over the Battery in 1998, 2000, and 2006 while Charleston defeated the Rhinos in 2003 en route to the USL First Division title.
Rochester finished the 2008 regular season with an 11-10-9 (41 points) overall record. They were 7-3-5 at PAETEC Park and 4-7-4 on the road. Charleston finished 11-12-7 (40 points) overall and were 9-3-3 at home and just 2-9-4 away from Blackbaud Stadium including a 1-0 win at PAETEC Park on May 17. Leading the way offensively for Rochester is 2008 Rhinos Most Valuable Player Johnny Menyongar. Menyongar finished the season as the team leader in goals (6) and tied for the team lead in scoring with Luke Kreamalmeyer with 17 points. Kreamalmeyer tied a single-season franchise mark for assists in 2008 with nine, equaling Martin Nash's 2000 total. In goal, captain Scott Vallow tied for second among USL-1 goalkeepers with 10 shutouts and finished third in the league in wins (11).
Randi Patterson led the Battery in scoring during the '08 campaign with eight goals and 17 points. In goal, Dusty Hudock played 22 games, posting an 8-8-6 mark and five shutouts.
