Rochester Rhinos News Release
DAYTON, OH - The Rochester Rhinos ended the month of June with a five match unbeaten streak, but could not extended it into July as they lost to the Dayton Dutch Lions 3:1 on Thursday afternoon, July 4th, 2013 at Beavercreek Stadium in Dayton, Ohio.
The Rochester Rhinos leading scorer Blake Brettschneider (four goals, three assists) opened the scoring for the visitors in the 38thminute, but Eli Garner scored the equalizer for the Dutch Lions in the 44thminute. Tjeerd Westdijk scored the game winning goal off of an assist from Garner in the 65thminute, and Gibson Bardsley finished off the scoring in the 80thminute.
The Rhinos had the better of the first half, and came close to opening the scoring in the 25thminute as a curling shot by Gabe Latigue beat Dutch Lions goalkeeper Matt Williams, only to come back off the crossbar. Dayton also had chances as they tried to apply pressure down the wings, with one move coming to Westdijk, only for his shot to go high of the goal.
The Rhinos would take the lead seven minutes before the halftime break as Blake Brettschneider got on the end of a cross and headed home. The Dutch Lions would hit back just before halftime, however, as Bardsley found Garner in the penalty area, and Garner scored his second goal of the season as the sides went to the break even.
Dayton had an early chance to take the lead in the second half, only for Garner's shot after a flicked header by Westdijk to be saved by Kristian Nicht. The Dutch Lions would take the lead in the 65th minute, however, as Shane Smith found Garner, who crossed for Westdijk to finish.
The Rochester Rhinos were forced to substitute 2012 USL PRO Goalkeeper of the Year Kristian Nicht due to injury in the 70th minute. Reserve goalkeeper Brandon Miller made his second professional appearance in USL PRO when he replaced Nicht in the 72nd minute. Miller's only other appearance came in a 2:2 draw with the Dutch Lions in Dayton last season.
Rochester tried to hit back in the final 20 minutes, and second-half substitute Mike Reidy went close with an effort that went just wide of the left post. Matt Horth also had an effort go over the crossbar with 12 minutes to go, but the Dutch Lions would put the game away two minutes later as a cross by Joey Madigan was put home by Bardsley for his sixth goal of the season.
The victory extends the Dutch Lions unbeaten streak to ten matches, and moves them up into fourth place in the table with 26 points from 14 matches. The loss leaves the Rhinos six points behind Pittsburgh for the eighth and final playoff spot with nine matches left to play. However, the Riverhounds host Charlotte at 7PM on Thursday, July 4th so Pittsburgh could be nine points clear of Rochester heading into the weekend.
The Rochester Rhinos will host the Charlotte Eagles in their next home match on Saturday, July 6that 7:05PM in Sahlen's Stadium. Individual tickets are currently available, and they can be purchased by calling (585)454-KICK (5425), by visiting the MVP Health Care Box Office at Sahlen's Stadium, or by visiting ticketmaster.com.
