"The schedule has been a challenge at the beginning of the season, but so far we've responded well to those challenges." Rhinos head coach Bob Lilley said. "We've come together as a team, focused on improving our performance every time out, and that's translated into results and points."
The Rhinos were at the bottom of the USL PRO table when they kicked off their match at Chicago Fire Reserves on Monday, April 21st, but a 3 - 0 - 3 run of form has propelled Rochester ten spots up the table over the past month. The Rhinos run has been built on a strong defensive foundation. Rochester is second in USL PRO in goals conceded with six. Rookie goalkeeper John McCarthy leads the league with four shutouts, while defensive quartet of Onua Obasi, Tony Walls, Kyle Hoffer, and Pat McMahon has conceded two goals in 540 minutes played.
Sacramento Republic FC enters Friday night's match with momentum both on and off the field. Professional soccer in Sacramento has been a huge success with Hughes Stadium averaging 19,292 fans per game, and two sellouts with 20,231 fans. On the field head coach Predrag Radosavljevi=C4=87 is unbeaten in the month of May with a trio of 2:1 victories over Orange County Blues FC and LA Galaxy II in USL PRO, and over Ventura County in the Second Round of the 2014 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Sacramento Republic FC is led by leading scorers Thomas Stewart (three goals, two assists) and Rodrigo Lopez (two goals, one assist). The match in Rochester is the first of two matches for Sacramento this weekend. They visit the Dayton Dutch Lions on Sunday evening.
"Sacramento is a good team, and their success is a good thing for our league." Lilley said. "They've got some quality attacking pieces that can hurt you if you're not careful. It will also be the first of a four game stretch in nine days for us. We got two points during our back-to-back weekend in Richmond and Wilmington, so we want to continue to show that we have the depth on our roster to put out teams that can get results even when the schedule gets busy."
