Rochester Rhinos News Release
ROCHESTER, NY -- The Rochester Rhinos welcomed the Puerto Rico Islanders to Marina Auto Stadium on Saturday night in the second leg of their two game aggregate goals series. The Islanders has captured the first leg with a 2-0 win at the Bayamon Soccer Complex on Thursday night.
The Rhinos looked sluggish early on allowing the Islanders to pressure off the counter attack.
The Islanders opened the scoring, taking a 3-0 lead on aggregate when Rochester's Kenold Versailles and Tyler Bellamy's attempted clears made their way to the feet of Alexis Rivera. Rivera calmly slotted his shot low to the left of goalkeeper Neal Kitson.
The Islanders nearly increased the lead in the 29th minute when he ran on to a loose ball and with David Horst with him on a 2-on-1 fired his shot wide of Kitson.
In the 39th minute and Rochester increasing their pressure they managed to beat Puerto Rico goalkeeper Bill Gaudette to cut the aggregate margin to 3-1. Frankie Sanfilippo sent a long ball into the box where Andrew Hoxie fought off a Puerto Rico defender to push a ball past Gaudette.
Rochester began to apply pressure in the early stages of the second half and it paid off in the 54th minute when a flurry of action in front of the Islanders net resulted in a shot off the crossbar by Rochester's Aaron Pitchkolan. With the ball laying in front of the net Anthony Hamilton cleaned up the rebound to make cut the aggregate deficit to 3-2. Minutes later after Isaac Kissi came into the match, the Ghana native got a head on a ball which nearly leveled the score.
Puerto Rico didn't sit back though as a 2-on-3 in the 63rd minute led to a low hard drive by Jonathan Fana that kept Kitson sharp. A restart opportunity in the 65th minute by Jonathan Greenfield was nearly volley in by Hoxie as Rochester kept applying pressure.
Kitson kept Rochester in the game with 22 minutes left as Fana had a golden opportunity but watched as the Rochester netminder held his ground to deny the Islanders striker.
The Rhinos continued to press the Islanders but ultimately couldn't get the series equalizer falling to Puerto Rico 3-2 on aggregate.
