Rochester Rhinos News Release
ST. LOUIS, MO -- The Rochester Rhinos closed out the 2010 regular season with a 2-1 win at St. Louis on Saturday night. Two second half goals by 2010 Offensive Player of the Year Isaac Kissi were the difference as Rochester recorded their 16th win of the season. The win keeps Rochester's chances of finishing the season first overall alive pending the result of the Austin Aztex match at Montreal on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
St. Louis wasted little time in getting things going taking an early lead on a 3rd minute goal by Chris Salvaggione to put the Rhinos in an early hole 1-0. Neither team generated many scoring opportunities during the remainder of the first stanza. With neither team able to muster much offensively the Rhinos ended the first half down a goal.
Trailing 1-0 early in the second half the Rhinos began to find their form offensively as Max Ferdinand coming off the bench fired a shot that just missed wide in the 60th minute. Persistence would pay off however as Kissi tied it by heading home a corner kick from Darren Spicer whose high cross found the Ghanian striker for his seventh goal of the season to make it 1-1. Kissi struck again, this time netting his eighth of the season in the 80th minute to give Rochester a 2-1 lead. The goal came of another corner kick taken this time by Tino Nunez in which Kissi managed to free himself long enough to notch his second of the match.
St. Louis seemed to have tied the score late in the match but the goal was ruled off-sides. Rochester would hang on to win the match 2-1 and for the moment put themselves in first place in the second division.
The win puts Rochester in position to earn first place overall in the league with a loss or tie by Austin at Montreal on Sunday. By finishing first overall the Rhinos would play Puerto Rico in the first round of the playoffs. An Austin win on Sunday would drop the Rhinos to third, making their first round opponent the Montreal Impact. Rochester's first home playoff game is set for Saturday, October 9 at Marina Auto Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m. rr
