Rhinos Acquire Marcina

(Rochester, NY)... The Rochester Rhinos announced the acquisition of forward Alen Marcina from the Minnesota Thunder today. Marcina, a 29-year old native of Surrey, British Columbia has three goals and two assists in 18 matches this season.

"I am excited for the opportunity to play in Rochester" said Marcina. "They are a team in position to win a title and that is something I want to be a part of."

Marcina's career has also seen him spend time in the USL First Division with the Puerto Rico Islanders in 2006 where he netted 13 goals in 27 matches. Following the 2006 season, Marcina signed with the New Zealand Knights Football Club of the A-League (Australia's Premier Football Competition). He netted his first goal for the Knights against the Newcastle Jets and also scored in the 3-1 win over the Queensland Roar.

He began the 2007 USL season with the Islanders before being dealt to the Montreal Impact where he appeared in eight matches before being traded to the Vancouver Whitecaps. The 5-10, 167 pounder signed with Minnesota in February, 2008.

Additionally, he spent the 2002-2003 season with the Ottawa Wizards of the Canadian Professional Soccer League where he tallied nine goals in ten matches. Following that he had a stint with Herfolge Boldklub of the Danish First Division.

"We are pleased to bring in a player who will add competition at the striker position" said Rhinos Head Coach Darren Tilley. "Alen is a player who can score goals and if he performs within our system, we believe he will be a good acquisition for us."

Marcina's contract runs through 2008 with a club option for 2009 and 2010.

The transfer is subject to USL and USSF approval.

BERTZ CLEARED TO PLAY

Rhinos defender Kenney Bertz has been cleared to play and is available for selection. Bertz, who had been with SV Elversberg of the German Third Division had been awaiting clearance from the German Soccer Federation and SV Elversberg before he could play with Rochester.
