Rhine Nets Player of the Week

NEW YORK (Monday, June 10, 2002) - Dallas Burn forward Bobby Rhine was selected as Major League Soccer's Player of the Week for the week ending June 9, 2002. Rhine notched his first-career hat trick Saturday night as the Burn torched Colorado 4-1 at the Cotton Bowl. The fourth-year striker also added an assist to his three-goal haul, tying the club record for points in a single-game with seven.

Rhine struck suddenly in the 4th minute, taking a pass from teammate Antonio Martinez at the midfield stripe and dribbling 40-yards into the Colorado penalty area. Fighting off a challenge from defender Rick Titus, Rhine calmly slotted home a right-footed shot to give Dallas a 1-0 lead.

In the 17th minute Rhine doubled the lead when he received a pass from teammate Oscar Pareja and dribbled more than 20-yards unchallenged before uncorking a 30-yard rocket that zipped past diving Colorado goalkeeper Scott Garlick into the upper left hand corner of the goal.

The 26-year-old Rhine turned playmaker on the Burn's third goal, when his curling cross from the left wing was finished by teammate Jason Kreis. Finishing his night in style, Rhine later knocked home his third goal of the night in the 74rd minute, easily slotting the return pass of a give-and-go from Joselito Vaca into the back of the net.

The hat trick was the third in Burn history, while Rhine's seven-point-game equaled the mark set by Kreis during his League MVP season of 1999.

In capturing his first career Player of the Week selection, Rhine edged D.C. United defender Ryan Nelsen, San Jose forward Ariel Graziani and New England's scoring ace Taylor Twellman for the honor. Major League Soccer's Player of the Week is selected every Monday throughout the MLS season by a panel of journalists from PSRA.
