Rio Grande Valley FC Toros News Release
KOGE, Denmark - Rio Grande Valley FC announced today the selection of forward Jose Angel Luna to the Capelli Sport USA U17 squad ahead of the 2022 edition of the Capelli Sport Cup, an international showcase tournament playing its third edition. The prestigious invitational tournament will be held from Monday, July 25 through Sunday, July 31.
This past May, the 16-year-old Luna signed a USL Academy contract with RGV FC, becoming the second-youngest player in club history. A native of Weslaco, Texas, Luna has since been competing in MLS Next tournaments to continue showcasing his talent while also training with the Toros' First Team under the direction of Sporting Director, Wilmer Cabrera. Luna has yet to officially debut for the Toros in the USL Championship.
The Capelli Sport Cup 2022 is set to be attended by scouts and agents as key partners to the tournament. The competition serves as a platform for these scouts and agents to assess the live on-field performance and overall skill level of the participating players, providing an incredible exposure opportunity for any aspiring professional footballer in the U-17 and U-19 world football ranks. Capelli Sport Stadium is the host venue for the tournament located in Koge, Denmark, just a half-hour drive from the country's capital Copenhagen.
This marks the first participation of an RGV FC Academy player in an international showcase on European soil. The Toros currently have five USL Academy signings ranging from 15 to 18 years old on the First Team roster, the most in the club's history in just its second year of operating as an independent club after transitioning away from its partnership with Major League Soccer's Houston Dynamo FC.
