Revitalized WIFL to begin 2007 season

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Maybe it was the river cruise on Osceola's 85-foot yacht, or comparing horror stories from their experiences in other football leagues, or finally hammering out the schedule, championship game format or finalizing a plethora of minor details.

Whatever the catalyst, staff and owners of the World Indoor Football League left the conclusion of Thursday's meetings revitalized and even more eager to begin their inaugural 2007 season.

"I'm feeling very positive about the direction of the league,'' said Osceola Ghostriders owner Dave Doebler. "We're a very tight-knit group of professionals who are dedicated to make things succeed. Let's kick off now."

Well, the kickoff will be February 11, 2007 when the Daytona Beach Thunder hosts the Augusta Spartans, but you get the idea.

The league recently took a big blow when the Rome Renegades and Carolina Bombers ceased operations, but all four teams have regrouped and rededicated to setting a new standard for indoor football.

"We believe in the structure and the business model,'' said Augusta Spartans General Manager Jessica Tyner. "With everything we went through in another indoor football league, we're looking forward to 2007 with this group."

Expansion efforts are continuing for 2008, but for now, the WIFL is four teams strong ready to go with a 14-game schedule that concludes in June.

"Silly season is all but over,'' said Commissioner Gary Tufford. "Now it's just a matter of the teams gearing up their sales efforts and getting ready for February.

"This was an extremely productive two days," Tufford added. "Our thanks go out to Bruce Dunn and his staff at DBCC Public Broadcasting 15 for an excellent place to meet, and Dave Doebler and Don Czech for their hospitality."

Thursday's activities included:

Completed web site maintenance training provided by Lyrehc Solutions of Daytona Beach, who designed an integrated system for the league, team and fan web sites that creates a consistent content appearance.

Agreed that all 29 games will be audio streamed on the internet. Home team will handle the league-provided broadcasting responsibility at their games, with the visiting team having the option to audiocast on the road.
