Republic FC Forward Luther Archimède to Represent Guadeloupe at Concacaf Gold Cup
June 21, 2023 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Sacramento Republic FC News Release
Later this month, Republic FC Forward Luther Archimède will represent his home nation of Guadeloupe at the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup - the confederation of North, Central and Caribbean Football's premier event for national teams.
Crowning a champion every two years, the Gold Cup has developed into a competition of 16 nations, which qualify via the Concacaf Nations League and the Gold Cup Prelims. The Gold Cup has been contested on 16 previous occasions - Mexico owns a tournament-record eight titles, followed by the United States with seven and Canada with one. The U.S. captured the inaugural championship in 1991, outlasting Honduras in the final 4-3 on penalty kicks after a scoreless draw.
Archimède joined his national team last week for the preliminary qualifying round in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, which places the last team in each group of the tournament. On June 16, Archimède tallied 45 minutes off the bench in Guadeloupe's win over Antigua & Barbuda, scoring his first career international goal in the 70th minute of the match. On Tuesday against Guyana, he entered in the 80th minute of his squad's 2-0 win.
Guadeloupe enters Group D of the tournament's 2023 edition alongside Canada, Cuba, and Guatemala. In the Group Stage, Archimède and his squad will face Canada at BMO Stadium in Toronto, Ontario on Tuesday, June 27, Cuba from Shell Energy Stadium in Houston, Texas on Saturday, July 1, and Guatemala from Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey on Tuesday, July 4. Should they secure a top-two spot, they will proceed to the quarterfinal round on July 8.
