Sacramento Republic FC News Release
Seaside, Calif. - Republic FC's five-match unbeaten streak came to a close on Saturday night in Seaside, as the Quails fell 1-0 to Monterey Bay F.C. at Cardinale Stadium. The match closes out the season dearies with the debutant club, 2-1.
Despite holding the ball in the hosts' defensive end for a majority of the match, Sacramento couldn't break through for a score. The hosts kept out the constant service from the wings, as Republic FC suffered their first defeat to a regional foe this season.
Republic FC came close to opening the scoring just before the five-minute mark. Advancing on the right, Jack Gurr put a well-placed cross to Keko crashing the back post. The Spaniard got a foot on the ball but couldn't get it past the outstretched dive of Union's goalkeeper.
Not quite ten minutes later, the hosts found the net off a set piece to take a 1-0 advantage. Monterey Bay's Christian Volesky headed through a free kick cross from James Murphy on the right for the only score of the contest.
Each club's defensive unit did well to send away threats all evening, combining for just a single major scoring opportunity through the hour mark, and only two for the entire match. Republic FC kept the possession advantage for most of the night, especially in the second half where Union was allowed only a few opportunities in their attacking half.
The Indomitable Club's preferred mode of attack came through the air. Sacramento serviced 28 crosses on the night, 11 of which came from Jack Gurr. Sacramento came close to evening the score line with ten minutes to go, when service from Maalique Foster and Zeiko Lewis provided opportunity for Deshorn Brown and Luis Felipe. But despite the constant pressure, Sacramento couldn't find a way to challenge Union from close range and finished the match with just two shots on target.
Mark Briggs' men have a quick turnaround and will take the pitch this coming Wednesday against Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC for the second match of a three-in-eight day stretch. Kickoff from Heart Health Park is set for8:00 p.m., and the match will be broadcast live on Antenna TV 40.2, FOX40.com and the FOX40 App, and streaming on ESPN+.
