Reno 1868 FC News Release
RENO, Nev. - Reno 1868 FC moved into second place in the USL's Western Conference tonight with a 2-0 win over rival Sacramento Republic FC. Reno (8-4-5) now sports 29 points, trailing Phoenix Rising FC for first in the conference. Reno moves to 5-1-3 at home, with two of the last three home wins coming by way of a shutout.
"It was a good win," said head coach Ian Russell. "I thought we were the better team, we created good chances and then finished. We got a clean sheet too, all in all a good night."
Raul Mendiola opened up the scoring in the 35th minute. Duke Lacroix delivered the ball before Mendiola broke through a crowd of defenders to score his fourth goal on the year.
Mendiola's goal would stand as the only score of the first half. At the break, shots were even at eight apiece, with Reno having three on goal to Sacramento's one.
The second half opened with a Sacramento penalty kick in the 47th minute, but JT Marcinkowski shut it down to preserve the 1-0 lead. His effort would be rewarded with a 60th minute goal to make it 2-0.
Sam Gleadle crossed the ball in to Sergio Rivas, who chipped a shot over the top of a falling goalkeeper to earn his second goal of the season.
The lead would hold, giving Reno the 2-0 lead and the win. Now sporting 29 points, Reno is six points back of Phoenix with a one point lead on third place Fresno FC. The second place position is the highest for the team this season.
"We started the year pretty strong, we've been pretty consistent this year," said Russell. "For the most part we've been getting points and climbing up the table."
Reno sweeps the Donner Pass Derby against Sacramento, winning 4-1 at Sacramento in May.
Fifteen-year-old forward Cade Cowell started for the second night in a row and third time this season. Lindo Mfeka came off the bench for the second game in a row after missing the previous five matches.
Reno was outshot tonight 14-9, marking the team's fourth win in the six games they've been outshot. The boys in blue finished the month of June with a 4-2 record, including two shutouts.
After beating Portland on Wednesday, Reno will be back in action on Wedesday for the third match in a week. Rio Grande Valley FC comes to town on Wednesday for an Independence Eve matchup, complete with post-match fireworks. Kickoff is set for 7:15 p.m. PT and tickets are available at reno1868fc.com or at the Greater Nevada Field ticket office.
