Ottawa Renegades News Release

OTTAWA – The Ottawa Renegades Football Club continued to add more players to the team's roster, announcing the signing of Brian Oddi and Derek Jones Tuesday.

Oddi, a Canadian linebacker who hails from Burlington, Ontario, played his college football at California University of Pennsylvania before signing with the Renegades. Jones is a specialist, who both punts and handles field goal kicking duties. The duo, who each signed contracts for one-year (plus an option) will be part of Ottawa's training camp, which opens in late May.

Oddi (pronounced O-Dee), 24, had an excellent college career in Pennsylvania. He was the conference leader in tackles in 2003 and last season, despite playing only six (of 10) games, was third in the team in stops with 50. His impressive junior campaign saw him accumulate 118 tackles (19 for loss) and 2.5 sacks.

"Brian is a Canadian linebacker that went back for his final year last season," said Joe Paopao, head coach and general manager of the Renegades. "He has tremendous athletic ability and he can play linebacker and free safety. Brian has good coverage ability, he can tackle and the entire staff is excited about having him."

Oddi, who ran a blazing 4.46 40-second dash last summer, measures 6-foot and 220 pounds. He also played tailback as a freshman in college and ran on the 4x100-metre relay track and field team.

Jones, 23, has previous NFL experience with stints in Miami (punter and kicker), St. Louis (punter) and New York Jets (punter and kicker) – all in 2004. At 6-foot-5, 228 pounds, Jones brings size and a good college background with him to Ottawa. He was a four-year starting punter with the Wolfpack and averaged over 40 yards per punt during his time in Nevada. He led the WAC conference in punting average in the 2002 season (40.9 yards). In his last year of college (2003), he had 71 punts for 2,847 yards, including 23 inside the 20-yard-line, and had none blocked. His career long punt is a 70-yard blast.
