
Reigning SPHL MVP Matt Auffrey Re-Signs with RiverHawks

The Augusta RiverHawks Hockey Club has announced that 2010-11 team captain and Southern Professional Hockey League Most Valuable Player Matt Auffrey has re-signed for the 2011-12 season.
"Matt brings experience, leadership and enthusiasm to our organization," said RiverHawks Head Coach Brad Ralph. "He is a true leader both on and off the ice. With his size and ability he is an elite player at this level. We are excited to have Matt lead his hometown team this season."
Auffrey, 25 (1/3/86), won MVP honors on the strength of scoring 21 goals and 49 assists for 70 points over 56 contests. The Evans Mill, NY native's 70 points ranked him third in the entire SPHL, and his plus/minus rating was second only to teammate Jason Price.
Auffrey was named team captain before the beginning of the 2010-11 season. He led the rookie-filled RiverHawks to second place during the regular season, just two points out of first-place in the league standings.
During the season he led the team in points and assists, was second in plus/minus, and was third on the team in goals. He also enjoyed a solid playoff campaign as the young RiverHawks won two series' before eventually falling to the Mississippi Surge in the President's Cup Finals.
The 6-2, 220-pound winger was selected by the Anaheim Ducks in the sixth round of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. He played two seasons in the East Coast Hockey League and also enjoyed two stints in the American Hockey League. He also spent one season in the International Hockey League.
Prior to starting his professional career, Auffrey split time between the Ontario Hockey League and NCAA Division I college hockey playing for the University of Wisconsin Badgers.
