TONIGHT: The RedHawks and Memphis Redbirds open a best-of-5, first-round playoff series to determine the champion of the American Conference. The winner will meet the Pacific Conference champion, either Tacoma or Sacramento, in the best-of-5 PCL Championship Series starting Sept. 14. OKC went 7-9 vs. Memphis in the regular season, winning 6 of the first 7 meetings before dropping 8 of the last 9, including the last 5. The RedHawks enter the post-season having lost their last 3 games at home against Omaha by a combined 20-2 margin. Memphis qualified by winning its final 2 games at Iowa to match the Cubs for the league's best record, taking the title on the second tiebreaker, which was record within the American North Division.

PREVIOUS TITLES: The Oklahoma City franchise, known as the 89ers from 1962-97, was a member of the PCL from 1963-68 and of the American Association in 1962 and again from 1969-97. The 89ers won the PCL championship in 1963, 3-1 over Spokane. They won again in 1965, 4-1 over Portland, both times managed by Grady Hatton and affiliated with Houston. During its years with the Texas Rangers dating to 1983, the 89ers won American Association titles in 1992 (4-0 over Buffalo) under Tommy Thompson and in 1996 (3-1 over Indianapolis) under Greg Biagini.

GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN: Here are notable 2010 RedHawks not available for the series:

* Michael Kirkman, the PCL Pitcher of the Year who finished second in the PCL with a 3.03 ERA, third in strikeouts (130) and No. 1 in win percentage (.813, 13-3), was recalled by Texas Aug. 20 and is a member of the Rangers' bullpen.

* Esteban German, second in the PCL in stolen bases with 50, had his contract purchased by Texas on Monday after spending the entire season with OKC.

* Pedro Strop, the team leader with 13 saves, was a Sept. 1 callup (his fifth promotion of the year).

* Clay Rapada, who sported the league's lowest opponents' average among relievers at .158, was a Sept. 1 callup.

* Chad Tracy, the team leader with 17 home runs, strained his left oblique hitting a homer July 7 and has been on the DL since.
