FARGO, ND - The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks used a three-run home run from designated hitter Jesse Hoorelbeke in the bottom of the sixth inning to dispatch the visiting Gary SouthShore RailCats 5-3 in the opening game of the 2010 Northern League playoffs on Wednesday night at Newman Outdoor Field.

RedHawks starter Scott Fogelson (1-0) and counterpart Brad Halsey (0-1) were locked in a pitcher's duel for a good portion of the game. Fogelson held Gary to just one run on five hits in 6.1 innings of action. The southpaw also struck out five and walked two. Gary's Halsey was also sharp early, limiting Fargo-Moorhead to just a run on three hits through five innings.

The RedHawks (1-0) were able to get to Halsey in the sixth with the game tied 1-1. Right fielder Mike Coles reached on an infield single and Nic Jackson followed with a walk. Fargo-Moorhead cleanup hitter Jeremiah Piepkorn punched an RBI-single through the left side of the Gary infield, scoring Coles and giving the RedHawks a 2-1 lead. Hoorelbeke then came to the plate and crushed a line drive over the wall in left field to extend the lead to 5-1.

Gary (0-1) rallied with two down in the eighth inning off Northern League ERA leader Casey Hoorelbeke. Former big leaguer Randall Simon singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch by Hoorelbeke. Right fielder Cristian Guerrero singled Simon home to cut the lead to 5-2. RailCats second baseman Louis Ott walked to put runners on first and second for shortstop Jay Pecci. Pecci drove a Hoorelbeke offering to right field, scoring Guerrero and cutting Fargo-Moorhead's lead to 5-3. Lefty Adam Tollefson then came on from the bullpen for the RedHawks to retire pinch hitter Jeff Beachum for the third out of the inning.

Donnie Smith pitched 1/3 of an inning for Fargo-Moorhead in the ninth to collect the save.

Jesse Hoorelbeke was 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored on the night for the RedHawks. First baseman Piepkorn also went 2-for-4 in the game for Fargo-Moorhead.

Gary's Pecci was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Designated hitter Simon also collected a pair of hits for the RailCats.

The two teams will meet tomorrow afternoon in the second game of their best-of-five semifinal series. Gary will send Nolan Nicholson (7-7, 3.82) to the mound to meet Fargo-Moorhead's Jake Laber (11-4, 3.90). First pitch is scheduled for 2:00pm.
