Charlotte County Redfish News Release

PORT CHARLOTTE, FL- The Redfish and the Foxhounds split the first two games of the series. The teams faced off Saturday night in a double header on the day of double 7s, which was the length of both games. The second game was a make up of a rained out game from earlier in the season. The Redfish led the first game before the Foxhounds staged a 3-run rally in the bottom of the 6th and took a 6-5 win. The Redfish came out of the gate swinging in the second game as they put up 3-runs in the 1st inning on their way to a 7-2 win.

Brandon Camardese was on the mound in game 1 against Brian Grijalva. Aiken reached Camardese in the 2nd inning as Kelly Hunt just got enough of the ball of the end of the bat for a solo homerun to give the Foxhounds a 1-0 lead. Charlotte County, who had base runners in all but two innings, struck back as their hot bats came to the plate in the 4th inning. PJ Lehmann earned a walked and was advanced all the way to third on a Josh Murray base hit through the right side of infield. Lehmann came in to the tie game as Jason Hurst reached as ‘Hounds shortstop Tim Sweeney misplayed the ball. After Mike Muscato sacrificed Murray and Hurst over and Aaron Simmons was intentionally walked, Brad Thoma tattooed a 2-RBI single to right field and the Redfish were up 3-1.

The Redfish added a pair in their next plate appearance as Murray walked and Hurst ripped a double up the middle. Muscato again came up in a big spot and delivered with a 2-RBI single and the Redfish were up 5-1 after the 5th inning. Brandon Camardese pitched great with his team giving him run support. The Foxhounds notched 2 more runs on Camardese two more runs on three hits in their half of the 5th inning, but he finished the night with 3 ER on 5 hits, a free pass and 2 Ks. He also did he part at the plate going 1-for-3 with a single and reaching on a fielder's choice.

A normally reliable bullpen couldn't silence the Aiken bats. Aiken plated 3 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning off Redfish reliever Justin Wichert (2-1) including another homerun by Hunt and the Foxhounds took the first game 6-5.

From the first pitch of the second game, the Redfish showed the Foxhounds that they meant business. Millard Dawson and Billy Kovatch hit back-to-back doubles and the Redfish had a 1-0 lead just two batters in against Aiken starter Jesse Krause (3-3). Kovatch moved to third on a passed ball and scored as Murray sacrificed him home with a well-hit ball to leftfield. The Redfish manufactured their third run of the inning as Hurst walked and then came home as Plaza and Simmons hit back-to-back singles. After just one inning, the Redfish were firmly in front 3-0.

For the second straight game, Charlotte County provided their starter great run support. Ricardo Gomez (2-1), in his third start, was in control and got great help from his defense. Will Gonzalez singled but was quickly erased as Gomez got Bradley Key to ground into 6-4-3 inning ending double play.

The Redfish gave Gomez even more of a cushion when Plaza destroyed a pitch from Foxhounds' reliever David Martinez and deposited it over the left field wall with 2-runners aboard. Gomez did allow two runs but set down 8 Foxhounds with strikeouts including two Ks to start the 5th inning and conclude the 6th inning. Rain came and ended the game after the 6th inning and the Redfish took home a split in the double header with a 7-2 win and they finished the first half of the season with a .500 record in the series.

The Redfish and the Music were set to begin the second half of the inaugural South Coast League season with a game Sunday afternoon. The teams got off to a late start and rain caused the game to be cancelled. The two teams will play tomorrow, July 9th, with first pitch at 7:05 PM. Today's cancelled game will be made up a as part of a double header on Tuesday, July 10th. First pitch will be at 6:05 PM.
