Redfish Line Unbaited Once Again

May 29, 2007 - South Coast League (SCL)
Charlotte County Redfish News Release

PORT CHARLOTTE, FL- The end of the first month of the inaugural season of South League Baseball and Charlotte County Redfish baseball draws closer by the day. The Redfish were looking to notch their first home victory before the month expired. Making his third start of the season, Redfish pitcher Alex Fernandez, was trying to hurl the Redfish out of their early season funk.

Fernandez (0-1) made his third start of the year for Jackie Hernandez, Redfish Manager, and the Charlotte County Redfish. He earned two no-decisions in his previous starts and was looking to improve on his 10.13 ERA in 10 2/3 innings pitched. Fernandez pitched a one-hit first hitting, but a botched decision with two-outs in the bottom of the second would prove to be Fernandez's undoing. The Redfish decided to walk Joe Neal, who was batting .125 with only one hit against the Redfish in two games played. The very next batter, the Juice starting pitcher, Lavelle Morgan (1-1), helped his own cause as he pulled Fernandez's pitch right down the line past a diving Jeremy McCann for an RBI triple at put the Juice up 2-0.

The Juice would add two more runs off three hits in the third inning as Fernandez started to go away from his breaking ball, which was working so well for him earlier in the ballgame. Fernandez lasted six innings, his second longest outing of the season, but couldn't get the job done allowing two more runs in the sixth and the Juice smacked nine hits and earned four free passes.

Morgan, who scored two runs for the Juice, didn't ever allow the Redfish to get anything started. In six innings, Morgan gave up one hit, awarded three free passes and fanned five. In relief, both team's bullpens were strong. For the Redfish, Yanier Manso and Ricardo Gomez, who joined the Redfish today and made his first appearance in Redfish red and blue, pitched a combined two innings allowing one hit, one walk and struck out two. The Juice relievers continued to plague Redfish hitters only giving up two hits, one walk and two strikeouts.

The Redfish hope that they can end their "home" stand on a good note as they take the field at Charlotte Sports Park, as visitors, and face the Bradenton Juice as part of the second installment of the "Sunshine State Rivalry Series" presented by Fairchild Roofing. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM. All Redfish games can be heard on 1070 AM WKII and online at www.redfishbaseball.com. The Redfish hit the road after tomorrow's game as they begin a six game road trip. For more information, check out www.redfishbaseball.com. Charlotte County Redfish Baseball - Reel in the Fun!
