Charlotte County Redfish News Release
PORT CHARLOTTE, FL- The first leg of the "Sunshine Series" sponsored by Fairchild Roofing is over in Charlotte County. The Redfish squandered a lead late for the second night and the Bradenton Juice now hold a 1-0 lead in the season series.
The Redfish (0-6) and the Juice (3-3) both had strong first innings. The Juice got six runs on six hits in the top of the inning and the Redfish added a pair of their own but left the bases loaded. The scored remained the same until third when Juice shortstop, Brenan Herrera scored all the way from first base on a Zach Woodward double. The Redfish would not go quietly in the bottom of the inning. Jeremy McCann singled to lead off the inning and advanced all the way to third, stealing two bases, after Juice starting pitcher, Lavelle Morgan, struck out Anthony Sandstrom. McCann trotted home thanks to an RBI double of the bat of Brian Jarosinski, the Redfish right fielder.
The Redfish broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth inning putting four runs on the scoreboard taking a 7-6 lead and knocked Morgan out of the ballgame. Morgan pitched five innings surrendering four runs on seven hits. The Redfish starter, Alex Fernandez, had another tough outing and was left the game in the bottom of the seventh with his second no decision of the season.
The seventh inning saw South Coast League history made as James Frisbee, the Juice Manager, was ejected arguing a controversial double-play call by umpire Bill Thomas. With Eddie Kim on third and Mikela Olsen on first, Herrera ground out into a what appeared to be a 5-4-3 double play. The controversy arose from Mikela Olsen over-sliding second base and interfering with Sandstrom. Because of the interference, Kim could not advance home. Frisbee argued vehemently but took the long, slow walk to the visitor's clubhouse.
Carlos Artiles came in to relieve Fernandez in the bottom of the seventh and got a ground out from Drew York, Juice Catcher, to end the seventh. The eighth inning was not as kind to Artiles, who gave up back-to-back singles and back-to-back doubles and the Juice took the lead and would never relinquish it.
Derek Hawk (1-1) got the win for the Juice and Artiles (0-1) threw one and one-third innings, allowing two runs on four hits and took the loss. The Juice closer, Steve Aleverson recorded his first save of the season.
The Redfish hope that the road will treat them better as they travel to Albany, GA to take on the South Georgia Peanuts. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:10 PM. All Redfish games can be heard on 1070 AM WKII and online at www.redfishbaseball.com. The Redfish return home on Monday, May 28th, to face the Bradenton Juice in the second leg of the "Sunshine Series" sponsored by Fairchild Roofing.
