Charlotte County Redfish News Release
PORT CHARLOTTE, FL- In a game that featured six pitchers for South Georgia and four Redfish pitchers, the game continued into the late hours of the night and into extra innings. Stolen bases and errors were presented and with one crack of the bat, everything changed for the Redfish and it wasn't good.
The Redfish got on the scoreboard first after Joes Gutierrez led-off with a triple and was sacrificed in by Ramon Downing. South Georgia answered in the second inning when starting pitcher Dustin Taylor roped an RBI single that brought home Joey Huft, who earlier walked and stole a base. The Peanuts would add a run in the third inning when Steve Butler drove in Johnny Washington on a fielder's choice. The game went quiet, with no hiccups, until the Redfish scored to tie the game in the sixth inning. Gutierrez wound up on first base after an error on Peanuts first baseman Steve Butler and later scored on an RBI single from Osvaldo Diaz.
South Georgia would not be out done as they scored two runs in an unconventional way. Steve Garrabrants doubled and later scored on a error by the Redfish third baseman Ramon Downing on a botched rundown play that also brought home Doc Brooks. The Redfish added another run and Gutierrez continued his great night. After drawing a walk, he scored when Downing skied a ball, which looked catchable, over the outstretched glove of Travis Hundley, the Peanuts left fielder. The Redfish still trailed and setup and interesting bottom of the ninth.
Pinch Hitter Sanyle Martinez leadoff the inning by drawing a walk. Gutierrez then was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on a Downing seeing-eye single. Gutierrez later scored on a sacrifice fly by William Plaza and then bedlam broke out at Charlotte Sports Park as the Redfish fans of 2,469 got their first taste of extra inning baseball.
The game reached into the late hours before Andrew Lane, the fourth of five Redfish relievers, walked Brooks and allowed a RBI single to Huft and the Peanuts took a 5-4 lead. They weren't done as Chris Demons pounded the new Redfish reliever, David Lipson's first pitch over the right-field wall and that was all as the Peanuts went onto to win by the scored of 8-4.
The winning pitcher was Shannon Wirth, who pitched two scoreless innings and only allowed one hit and struck out a batter. Andrew Lane took the loss pitching only 2/3 of an inning and gave up four run, all earned, on two hits.
The Redfish wrap-up their inaugural opening series against the South Georgia Peanuts tomorrow night, May 20th, with the first pitch being thrown out at 6:05 PM and can be heard on 1070 AM WKII. It will be Pledge Red, Hurricane Awareness Night Presented by Florida Blood Centers and the American Red Cross at Charlotte Sports Park. Also, Joe Cracker will be presenting "Sunday Supper" and kids will get to run the bases after the game. For more information, check out www.redfishbaseball.com.
