Redfish boast three new catches

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, FL- Miami is typically known as Marlin territory, but this past Sunday, the Redfish came to town to steal away a few prize catches.

The Charlotte County Redfish held an invite only tryout last Sunday at Miami Dade College and signed three new members for their 2007 roster. Second baseman Anthony Sandstrom, INF Sanyam Martinez, and OF Osvaldo Diaz were selected from a group of 35 invitees that showcased their skills for Redfish manager Jackie Hernandez (second from right). Players were tested on their hitting, speed, and fielding abilities and while many players possessed the talent to garnish some attention, only three made the cut.

Osvaldo Diaz (far right in photo) was born in Havana, Cuba and was chosen by the Houston Astros in the 40th round of the 2001 amateur draft. Diaz has also played with the Cincinnati's Reds Dominican Republic Winter League team and the Missoula Osprey of the Pioneer League (Single A-Diamondbacks).

"I am eager to help my new team win and possibly get signed again to get back to the show," said Diaz.

Another Havana native, Sanyam Martinez (middle), played centerfield for Barbara High School in Miami before attending Florida Career College.

Anthony Sandstrom (second from left), a Hartford, Connecticut native, attended the University of Richmond where he hit five homeruns and drove in 23 for the Spiders in 2005.

The recent signings put the total of Redfish players under contract at six. The Charlotte County Redfish will begin play on May 18th at the Charlotte County Sports Park against the South Georgia Peanuts.
