Rochester Red Wings News Release
ROCHESTER, NY - The approaching baseball season marks the 20th year of the Rochester Red Wings at Frontier Field. A commemorative logo has been created to mark the landmark season of the second home ballpark for the Red Wings since 1929.
After Rochester spent the 1929-1996 seasons at Red Wings Stadium - renamed Silver Stadium in 1968 - a groundbreaking ceremony for Frontier Field was held on November 16, 1994 but construction didn't begin until July, 1995 due to state budget cuts. The $33 million dollar project took one year to complete and Frontier Field was officially opened on July 11, 1996, christened by a Beach Boys concert. The ballpark opened for baseball on April 11, 1997, drawing a crowd of 13,227, still the fifth-largest baseball crowd in stadium history.
The Red Wings have played for two Governors' Cup Championships - 1997 and 2006 - while calling Frontier Field home. Rochester won its 10th Governors' Cup during the inaugural 1997 season.
Frontier Field has hosted many non-Red Wings events since opening including the Triple-A All-Star Game in 2000, the Field of Dreams Game and Frozen Frontier in 2013, among many concerts, festivals and charity events. Frontier Field was also home to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders for 38 regular season and two postseason games in 2012.
The logo reveal is the first of many special announcements regarding the 20th season at Frontier Field in 2016. Promotions and giveaways will be announced as they are finalized in the coming weeks. The Red Wings open the home schedule on Saturday, April 9 at 4:05 p.m., just 86 days away.
